Energy & Its Sources

I never like calling nutrition class Nutrition 101 or Nutrition Basics. I think when you do, most people tune out since they have probably been to one. I like to talk about energy and the sources in order to help people understand where our calories come from.

Where do calories come from? (There are 4 places)

Carbohydrates - 4 calories per gram

Protein - 4 calories per gram

Fat - 9 calories per gram

Alcohol - 7 calories per gram

Most people forget that alcohol has calories. Nutrients like vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals do not have calories. Water does not have calories either.

If you take a look back at the calories per gram, alcohol is almost as much as fat. I have clients that do not include their daily wine or martini. These drinks can add up fast and slow you down from reaching your weight or fitness goals.

If you want to cut out calories without changing to much of your diet, cut back on the drinks and lower your intake of unhealthy fats (saturated and trans-fats).

Not all carbohydrates (sugars) or fats are created equal. That will be for another post in the near future on calories and which ones are better choices.
